Catfishing and scams used to be the only problems in modern dating. However, arriving now on the scene is a new nightmare for 21st-century dating — roaching. And no, it doesn’t involve cockroaches, but it is just as horrid.

What is Roaching?

It’s a new trend in modern dating that refers to a person hiding their sexual partners. It was derived from the behavior of cockroaches, referencing how they multiply in the shadows.

Your date might tell you that they are seeing other people to “keep their options open,” but they hide the actual number of people from you. It becomes roaching when you discover for yourself that the person you’re seeing is also seeing a lot of other people.

We don’t mean the roach is seeing only two to three people because that’s normal for dating enthusiasts. No, we mean seeing roughly nine to ten people all at the same time. They are meeting and dating an abnormal amount of people.

This leads to hurting the modern dating culture of openness and communication. The truth is people who roach only want one thing — sex. They end up ruining the experience for most people trying to find something real.

How to Notice the Red Flags?

If you’re dating someone and they seem distant, that might be an early red flag to keep an eye on. People who are fond of roaching are true masters of deception and manipulation. They will straight up deny everything while keeping you in the dark.

Here are a few red flags to look out for:

  • They never plan.

When someone is roaching, they never make plans for dates or hanging out. However, once they do, an alibi always comes up so they won’t have to show up. Simply put, a roach will make time when you fulfill their interest.

If it’s your turn, the roach will act nice, and the date will always end up in a room. All they will look forward to is getting in your pants. After that, they won’t communicate with you again for a long while.

  • It should still be casual.

One thing that all roaches do is blatantly ask or demand to keep things casual between you. It’s a technicality that roaches maintain to stay positive in their moral views. In their heads, “We are not exclusive, so I can get whoever I want.”

  • You are always at an arm’s length.

You’ll never be able to get past the walls to gain trust with a roach. A person like that will always keep you away from their core life, phones, and daily routine because they don’t want to get involved with you and build attachments.

What to Do When You Find Out

Being a roach is technically not cheating unless both of you have agreed on your exclusivity. Roaches just make sure to keep their sex life hidden from every one of their sexual partners.

The best thing you can do when you find out is to give them the talk. They either choose you, or you can end things politely between each other. Make them choose to remain unbothered by whatever happens next.

However, if you’re comfortable with a polyamorous person as your partner, then we fully support the consensual relationship. Just remember to protect yourselves and steer clear of STDs!
