As an Asian woman who works to help singles find love and connection, I have a deep interest in how societal attitudes influence who we choose as romantic partners. For many in my parents’ and grandparents’ generation, racial purity and sticking within one’s own ethnic community were seen as important values. However, these attitudes stem from racist ideologies that have no place in a currently multicultural society.

Social Taboos Perpetuate Discrimination

Social taboos against interracial relationships are meant to “police” racial boundaries and uphold the misguided belief that races should remain separate. As a result, interracial couples continue to face discrimination and judgment.

But their love and willingness to cross these manufactured divides should be celebrated, not condemned. Interracial relationships do not undermine racial identities but rather reinforce our shared humanity beyond surface-level differences.

A Narrow and Fixed View of Culture and Race

Some argue that interracial relationships will weaken cultural traditions or that racial purity must be maintained. But culture and race are not fixed or tied to skin color. They are unique and amazing parts of our identities that we can celebrate while also recognizing our shared bonds with those from different backgrounds.

Overcoming Our Own Prejudices

As long as prejudices against interracial love exist, discriminatory practices like racial profiling and attempts to police racial purity will live on. Interracial couples deserve our respect and support in the face of racist taboos and discrimination. And each of us must examine our own attitudes to overcome prejudices we may hold, even unconsciously, about who people should or shouldn’t love based on their race or ethnicity.

An Inclusive Future Filled with Love

Only when we as a society have moved past these prejudices will people truly be free to love, regardless of race or ethnicity. As we embrace our shared humanity, taboos against interracial relationships will finally become relics of the past. The future is one of inclusion, openness, and mutual understanding across all racial boundaries.

Love, not racial purity, will have the final say.

In the end, policing who people should and shouldn’t love based on race or ethnicity only serves to dehumanize us all. Love knows no boundaries, and it is time society catches up to these truths. Our diversity makes humanity rich, and interracial relationships should be a cause for joy and celebration. The openness of our hearts, not the color of our skin, determines our ability to love and our capacity to accept being loved in return.
