LIFE & MARRIAGE

“Is marriage still necessary?”

Does it really make sense to get married anymore?

Honestly, it depends on the person and where they’re from.

  • If you value commitment, then yes, marriage is probably important to you. If you grew up in a religious and/or conservative family, then it is probably still important to you.
  • But there are plenty of people, mostly from the younger generation, who look at all the divorces they’ve seen and think that it isn’t necessary anymore. Especially when marriage is mostly a religious thing, where you make your vows in the presence of God.

A lot of people have differing opinions on the matter, but if you really want a straight answer, then I will have to say: Yes.

Marriage does matter. At least, as a happily-married woman, it matters to me. If you’re in love and have been with the person you care so much for the longest time, marrying him just makes sense.

To my husband, he had waxed poetic about how it was something close to magical when we stood at the pews. In his words, “There is something to standing in front of your family, friends, and loved ones and vowing to be with a person for the rest of her life. It’s more than just a piece of paper.” And I agree.

There are pros and cons, of course. Such as legal protections and benefits. Marriage gives the spouses certain legal protections during and at the end of the marriage like:

  • protection of the family residence and its furniture
  • protection against replacement as a beneficiary under an insurance policy if the beneficiary is named through a will
  • partition or division of property at the end of the marriage
  • possibility of asking for spousal support payments from the other spouse
  • possibility of inheriting from the other spouse if he dies without a will

There are many more practical reasons to consider marriage, as it does have ramifications in the realm of property, immigration, etc.,

But these are just several of the many things to get through as an adult. Heaven knows my marriage isn’t, but I still wouldn’t trade it for the world.

But those are just my thoughts on the matter. Like I said, it depends on the person.
